The Importance of Hydration…

Great little blog on the importance of hydration from EP Coach Paul…. have a read:

Feeling much better after starting to take two every morning before breakfast. Indian pharmacy! Many rogue pharmacies are happy to bypass a doctor’s prescription in order to win your business.

With summer finally arriving, (I hope!) the warm weather has reminded me about the importance of staying hydrated, especially when taking part in physical activity. So I thought I’d share a few facts on why it is so vital to stay hydrated and the effects of dehydration on sports performance.

The main reasons dehydration has an adverse effect on exercise

1. Reduction in blood volume. When dehydrated the volume of blood in your system decreases, which correlates to a reduction in oxygen being transported to working muscles.

2. Decreased skin blood flow. When dehydrated less sweat is produced by our bodies which has an effect on the ability of our body to cool down when exercising. Increased core temperature and a reduced ability for the body to cool itself through heat dissipation (sweat) all have an adverse effect on performance.

3. Increased rate of muscle glycogen use. Glycogen stores, which we use for energy when exercising are used quicker when dehydrated or training in hotter climates consequently we will fatigue quicker than normal.

When 5% dehydrated, your capacity to perform can decrease by 30% and an even lower level of just 2% dehydration can have a notable affect.

As well as helping to achieve optimal performance there are many other reasons why drinking plenty of fluids can help overall health. Benefits such as maintaining joint health, weight management and increased concentration are just some reasons why staying hydrated can help your sporting performance and enable you to feel healthy and energised!
