#ThursdayTherapy New Year Resolution activity balance…

EP Therapist Gail shares her thoughts on looking after your body and maintaining balance while in the midst of January NY Resolution fever….

“This time of year a lot of people decide to make changes about their activity level and this is great, not just for your body but your mind as well. It’s important to get the balance right between pushing your body, at whatever level you’re at, and allowing it time to recover and repair.

Rest days, combined with a good balance of nutrition and sleep, allow your body to carry out repairs to tissues, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the muscles, this leads to improved performance.

Having a rest day doesn’t mean doing nothing, so walking, gentle stretching/yoga or something appropriate to you personally. Nutrition plays a big part not just what you eat but the timing as well, and the all important hydration.

As mentioned in a previous Thursday Therapy post massage is one of the most effective ways to reduce Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS). From a professional point of view it’s worth having a regular massage, not just for the physical benefits mentioned but also for reducing tension/stress and improved sleep.
