EP Sports Therapist Becky’s latest blog…..
In EP sports massage we see alot of clients carrying tightness in their neck and top of the shoulders (your upper trapezius muscle).
Massage is a great way to ease the tension through this area, as tightness here can lead to neck pain and tension headaches.
However, long term you need to think about what is causing the tightness here.
Is it poor posture?
Are your muscles in your shoulders and back not working together as they should?
Are your traps working harder than other muscles?
Sometimes the upper traps can over work to compensate for the lower traps not switching on. If you can get your lower traps to work harder this can help to ease tightness through your neck and shoulders! Below are some easy exercises to do this:
Lying on your front, rest your forehead on the floor. Raise your arms straight up into a Y postion.Keeping Your neck relaxed, raise your arms backwards to squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for 2 seconds and relax. Complete 3 sets of 10 x 2 second holds.
Lying in the same position bring your arms down so your elbows are tucked into your sides and your forearms point out to the side slightly in a W position. Same as before, squeeze back to bring your shoulder blades together. Hold for 2 seconds and relax, complete 3 sets of 10 of these 2 second holds.
