#TuesdayCharity World Encephalitis Day

As you may know Head Coach Kim is a big supporter of The Encephalitis Society since contracting Weils disease and consequently encephalitis. In 2018 Kim won the Inspirational Fundraiser Award after several years of big hairy challenge events, highlights include the Sierra Leone Marathon and more recently the Himalayan 100!

The lovely people at the Encephalitis Society have written a guest blog for us to raise awareness and to encourage all to get involved with BrainWalk…..

“A recent poll carried out by YouGov revealed that 78 per cent of people across the globe do not know what encephalitis is.

This was a shocking figure and is why World Encephalitis Day on February 22 is so important to us and our supporters – like Kim – who want to raise awareness of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and the impact it can have on individuals and their families.

As Kim will no doubt tell you, exercise has played an important role in her life before and after encephalitis which is why this year’s campaign once again revolves around BrainWalk, our award-winning smartphone App.

The idea behind BrainWalk is simple.

BrainWalk counts the steps you do each day and adds them to a grand total so we – as a global team – can march to different parts of the world which are in some way related to encephalitis. It was designed to get users moving and thinking and hopefully reduce the sense of isolation that can follow an acquired brain injury like encephalitis.

The response this year has been phenomenal. We have had around 1,000 users from 23 countries so far – figures which keep rising every day.

This success is down to people like Kim and her friends and family. They know how difficult it can be to move forward with life after being affected by encephalitis and yet they do: Day after day, month after month, year after year.

And perhaps what is best about this courage and determination is how they encourage others who are early in their recoveries with encephalitis – a generosity of spirit which inspired our decision to create BrainWalk in the first place.

*If you would like to join Kim in joining BrainWalk, please visit your smartphone’s App store and search for BrainWalk. Simply download the free App and sync it with your phone’s health kit.”
