EP Sports Therapist Becky works with Bristol Rugby and with their recent loss, here are some thoughts on turning setbacks into comebacks….
“I am definitely no expert in Sports Psychology and I’m sure Head Coach Kim knows a lot more about everything mind based than I do, but as I’ve found this week when you hit setbacks it can be hard to bounce back or find motivation to get back on your feet.
Which is why I think its so important for anyone embarking on a rehab journey to use something like SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed) and I try to use them as much as possible not just for the client but for me as well.
Specific: It has to be tailored to you, injuries are rarely ever the same so it needs to be specific to where your at. Measurable: This is more of scale in which you can chart your progress and reach markers (i.e. increase weights by 10kg) rather than reach a solid deadline. Achievable and Realistic: These come as a pair, you have to come up with something that isn’t a mountain to climb, goals can always be increased as you go. Timed: how long is a piece of string? This is a tough one as rehab isn’t straight forward, it could be shorter than you thought, or it could be longer.
Remember to tell your therapist if you aren’t happy with your exercises, or if you find them boring. We want you to have fun with it and have highs to cancel out the inevitable lows, Use video’s and music to help keep you motivated, try not to treat it like work!”
