#ThursdayTherapy: achilles & calf pain

In this week’s Thursday Therapy EP Sports Therapist Becky talks about the lower leg  and in particular achilles and calf muscle pain…..

‘In the past few weeks a few clients have been suffering from achilles or calf pain, often people see these problems as two seperare issues but as you can see in the picture the thick band of tissue that is the achilles tendon feeds into your calf in one fluid structure.

This can mean that if you’re suffering from achilles pain the problem can often come from your calf muscle. It’s important to maintain good flexibility in your calf muscles as they are recruited during running, jumping and walking. If these muscles are tight it has a knock on effect and puts more strain on your achilles. A great way to reduce inflammation and release tension is to fill an empty bottle (a water bottle or squash bottle will do) with water, put it in the freezer untill all the water has frozen then use as a foam roller!

Other causes of achilles pain can include;
– Change of footwear
– A sudden increase in activity, particularly road running
-Imbalances in your foot

These issues can all be easily resolved with the help of rehabilitation and massage, if you’re suffering from achilles or calf pain and would like to know more email me at energisedbecky@gmail.com’
