One of the most common problems I find my patients suffering from is tightness in their muscles and the strain this puts on surrounding joints. These problems can be prevented, or at the very least eased, by stretching around 3 times a week. Yet it is one of the most overlooked aspects of exercise.
Lower back pain is just one of the issues that can be eased by stretching your hamstrings, hip flexors and glutes more regularly, as tightness in these areas can put extra pressure on the lower back. Other issues such as reoccurring strains, poor flexibility and cramping can all be eased by regular stretching. Especially with the colder weather muscles tend to be a lot stiffer when exercising outdoors, so adding in a few stretches to your routine will keep your joints and muscles working well.
Stretches need to be held for a minimum of 30 seconds to feel the benefit, remember to only stretch as far as you are comfortable!
